Mindfullness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is one of several meditative echniques derived from Eastern philosphy and religion which is increasingly catching on as an alternative to medication use for anxiety and depression. MBSR incorporates techniques including meditation and being in the moment. A meta-analysis (where data from all studies are put together) of mindfulness meditation found that

MBSR was a useful adjunctive intervention for patients with a broad range of chronic disorders, including patients with cancer, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and psoriasis (Grossman et al 2004).

Mindfulness may be defined as intentionally paying attention to present-moment experience (physical sensations, perceptions, affective states, thoughts and imagery) in a non-judgmental way and thereby cultivating a stable and non-reactive awareness. It is a state of sustained attention to these ongoing mental contents and processes without thinking about, comparing, or in other ways evaluating them. In mindfulness meditation attention is brought to notice whatever thoughts, feelings, and sensations are appearing in awareness, while at the same time remaining aware of the capacity to maintain the focus of attention on these contents, or to deliberately redirect attention to a wider field of awareness or to a different object. Bringing these mental processes under greater voluntary control and directing them in beneficial ways fosters psychological and physical well being, giving one a greater sense of control, and thoughts and feelings no longer threaten to overwhelm him/her. A person’s increasing tolerance for his/her experiences may in turn lead to reductions in emotional reactivity elicited by the symptoms, enabling the person to respond and behave more effectively. Further, participation in MBSR has been shown to increase participants’ overall sense of control through a positive accepting mode of control, which is associated with greater emotional well being.

MBSR has been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety and panic in patients diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder (maintained at three-year follow-up) as well as anxiety in patients with heart disease. MBSR has also been shown to be effective as an adjunctive intervention in reducing psychological distress and depression, as well as health-related quality of life. Reported favorable changes in distress (SCL-90-R) have been found to endure at three-month follow-up, six-month follow-up, and four-year follow-up (Miller et al 1995; Tacon et al 2003).

The bottom line is that MBSR and other meditative are helpful and demonstrate how changing the mind can influence the body. And best of all there are no side effects!

Insomnia is taking a toll on our health more than ever before. With increasingly busy days, the pressure to multitask, rising costs of living and more, increased levels of stress and anxiety are making it nearly impossible for many people to get a good night’s sleep. However, restorative sleep is essential for performance and surviving in a fast-paced world. Are there insomnia cures available that will free us from this vicious cycle?

Fortunately, there are ways to cure insomnia that don’t involve dependence on sleeping pills. The first step is to determine why the insomnia is occurring. In a large majority of cases, inability to sleep is caused by stress and anxiety. Stress is a physiological reaction that has long been essential for our survival in a hostile world. However, as civilization has spread throughout most of the inhabited world, there is rarely a need to flee from danger or stand and fight. Our body doesn’t recognize the changing environment and continues to pump our bodies full of adrenaline and other powerful chemicals.

By the end of the day we are completely wired and it becomes very difficult to relax. Even though our bodies are physically tired, our brains are still struggling to deal with the pressures of the day. Thoughts whirl around in circles and sleep refuses to come. Any attempt to force your brain to let go seems to have the opposite effect.

The good news is that you can learn to deal effectively with stress. There are several different stress reduction techniques that have been proven effective against everyday stress assault on our body. These techniques can be as simple as breathing deeply for several minutes. Or you may find that certain visualization or meditation techniques are more successful.

The important thing to remember is that insomnia is not inevitable. Your best defense against insomnia and other sleep disorders is to develop an arsenal of stress reduction techniques. There’s a good chance that your sleep will begin to improve right away. If you need more help, there are several additional insomnia cures that you can implement to get the sleep you need. You don’t have to live in a permanent, sleep-deprived fog. Take action against your insomnia today and start sleep better tonight.

The best way to reduce your stress is to really know what it IS, that is making you stressed! So sit down for a minute and think about last year. You can look at a calendar to remind yourself of events, or appointments. This may jog your memory, such as realizing that taking your kids to the doctor can stress you out. Stress can also grow from your surroundings. Are you disorganized? Are your drawers and closets filled with clutter? Do you waste a lot of time searching for items?

• Determine your stressors (flip through last year’s calendar, talk to your spouse, look around your house, etc)
• List them (if you can) in order of what stresses you the most
• Divide them into categories (related topics, i.e. meals, errands, carpool, clutter)
• Determine how often a particular thing makes you feel stress (daily, weekly, monthly).

Now you should have a pretty good idea of what makes your blood boil. So your next step is to:

Get proactive

It would be nice if we could wave a wand and all our stress would vanish. Of course that’s not going to happen, but finding a solution WILL lower stress. You must commit your time to take positive action – get proactive! You can choose to do something about your level of anxiety or you can choose not to. It is not the kid’s fault, the dogs fault, your bosses fault if you are continually in a stressful mode. It is your choice – so choose to de-stress!

What will give you the most peace?

No matter what, you will run into stress. Yes you can reduce it in many ways, but a good way to ride through the little stresses in life is combating the big one. This will be different for everybody. You may feel grocery shopping is a nightmare. It is your biggest stress of the week? Well you HAVE to eat right? Can your spouse do the shopping? Is it worth hiring a personal assistant that shops for you? Maybe your 16-year old would love the chance to drive to the store? Give her a list and get her out of the house!

You may notice that you are late dropping the kids to school every day because you can’t find your keys, the kid’s lunch money, your son’s football jersey, your daughter’s flute. It is a fact that if you eliminate clutter you will reduce stress. A place for everything is crucial! But everything does not have to be in its place. This depends on your needs and your life style. Will you find peace if you stop running around in circles?

Come up with solutions

How much time do you lose daily just looking for misplaced items? Hiring a Professional Organizer can be a solution for many. Professional Organizers do more than clean out file cabinets. They help determine what aspects of your life are making you disorganized, whether in your home or office, and they find solutions that will make you more productive and less stressed. Often these solutions are so simple you wish you had thought of them years ago.

Here are just a few simple solutions you can try today:

• Teach your children to use an alarm clock
• Set up a dry erase board or “list” where everyone rights down items they need. (If they don’t put chocolate milk or shampoo on the list, then you won’t know to shop for it and they won’t get it)
• Have a dirty laundry basket in a central location. (If someone needs a shirt for the next day, it better be in there or they wear something else)
• Create a “special place” (folder, drawer, shelf) for your child to put the papers he brings home from school
• Let the answer machine take a message (return calls at YOUR convenience)
• Keep extra supplies in your car. (put clothing, water, snacks, wipes in a bag that fits under the seat or in the trunk – trust me this will come in handy more than you know)
• Pack lunches the night before
• Lay out clothes for school/work the night before
• Run errands a non-rush hour times (if possible)
• Limit what you can do in a day. (Train yourself to not bite off more than you can chew!)

Who can help you?

There are so many places to turn these days for help. Depending on your needs, you can find assistance in a variety of ways. Your child’s school may offer free classes or support groups. You can network with other parents, who feel the same stress as you, when you attend an open-house, career day or even your daughter’s soccer game. Your neighbors are a great source of help too. You may find a carpool, dog sitter or a new friend. Turn to your spouse, sister, and friends for support. You can also look at hiring individuals or a company for your particular needs. College students are often a good source for after school babysitting. Personal Chefs can do your shopping and cooking. Professional Organizers can restructure your files, closets and your lifestyle.

Categorize the problems

You may have done this already when you assessed your stresses. If not, then create categories now, and determine where your stresses fall. It is important to know whether something makes you very stressed or minutely stressed. Categories can include such things as; driving, shopping, phone calls, volunteer work, travel, kids, pets, other family responsibilities/commitments, house maintenance, finances, cooking, cleaning.

Once you place your stressors into categories you can easily see where your biggest tensions arise. Then you can make changes to eliminate trouble spots. For instance, let’s say you find driving the kids to school in the morning can become lost time, thus putting you into a “rush” sequence for the day. Maybe your husband can drop the kids at school on his way to work? Can he adjust his work schedule a half hour? Perhaps your children will have to chip in and start taking the bus or find a ride with a school friend.

Another example could be that you get home too late to make a decent meal. You feel obligated to make a nutritious dinner but you are too tired to spend an hour cooking. There are a few solutions. You may prepare meals over the weekend and freeze them for use during the week. You may find a cookbook or a website that offers easy, nutritious meals that you can prepare in 30 minutes or less. Find five or ten recipes you like and make them your weekday dinners. Maybe you give yourself a night off and every Wednesday you order out or go out to a restaurant.

You may find that you are simply not organized. It’s not the cooking but knowing what to cook or having the right ingredients. Her are some ideas:

• Keep an “on-going” grocery list on the refrigerator and find a time to shop that works around your schedule.
• Delegate! Have your kids or your spouse cook one night a week.
• Create a box or file with only the recipes you like. Don’t waste time reading through a cook book each night or trying to find a recipe in your “junk” drawer! Divide recipes into categories such as dinner, lunch, snacks, quick meals, etc.
• Change grocery stores and go to the store that offers already prepared meals. You can purchase whole, cooked chickens, pasta, potatoes, salads etc., and start eating as soon as you walk in the door!

Do whatever it takes to get the peace you need

Your home will only run as well as you do. It’s important to do whatever it takes to get the peace you need. That often means putting yourself first. It is not selfish to take care of yourself, it is irresponsible not to. If you continue to build stress you will become ill. What good will you be to your family if you are in bed all day or worse, in the hospital?

Try something new and don’t be afraid to change the rules

Too many times we fall into a rut. We do it one way because it was always done that way. Unfortunately many people fear change, simply because it’s unknown. But if you are so stressed, tired, or disorganized, how can it get worse if you sincerely try to change to make it better?

For example, if you have a lot of clutter, I have a simple principle to help you reduce that clutter and gain control of your life. Love it or lose it!

Every item around you represents a choice you made. You either went out and selected it; or it came to you, and you accepted it. Look at that item, whether it is a piece of paper, a piece of jewelry, or a piece of furniture, and ask yourself do you love it? If you do not know that item to be useful, believe it to be beautiful or love it for personal reasons, it’s time to get rid of it.

You may find this principle will work on other aspects of your life. Do you love to coach softball? If not, why are you doing it? The kids won’t benefit if coaching stresses you out. If you are invited to potluck, do you bring the potato salad that the hostess asked you to bring or are you willing to tell her that you love to bake and would prefer to bring a cake? If making the salad stresses you out, then change the rules a little. The solution may just make everybody happy!

Post the new plan

You have a plan to reduce stress and you are doing a great job implementing it. But outside factors can get in the way. So POST the new plan. Keep your calendar in a place that everyone has access. Refer to a central location for information (stop leaving notes all over the house and in your pockets!). Plan ahead and keep the lines of communication open. Maybe it’s time that your whole family carries a cell phone. Give them a specific time to check in with you so you know their schedule. Now you will know in plenty of time whether to cook dinner for two or four.

Stay in control. Assess the year as you go

Maintaining your success and keeping the process flowing is essential. Take a real look at the improvements in your life and the reduction of your stress. That should be incentive enough to keep up the good work. But if you need a bit more encouragement then look for a support group or a person that will hold you accountable. Maybe you buy your daughter new earrings every time you are late picking her up from band practice. Maybe she buys you a pair if she is late and you have to wait! You can also celebrate your success. If you manage to keep your desk top clean for a week you can treat yourself to a half hour soak in the tub. Of course your husband will have to watch the kids! Get him involved in helping you stay in control. One persons stress can easily carry over to another, but on the flip side, if you are happy, those around you will be too.

Stress is a psychological experience that affects body and mind profoundly. It is true that a certain amount of stress does the wonder; however, acute or prolonged stress offers negative effect altogether. In the later case, we need to undergo through appropriate measures offering different stress reduction techniques. Otherwise, it may lead to serious complications such as suicide, violence, heart attack, stroke and even cancer in some of the cases.

Stress reduction refers to a process in which different techniques are executed to counteract with various stressful conditions and to offer a sense of serenity and relaxation in return. This article explores different stress reduction techniques.

Impact of stress

The experience of stress is somehow individualized to some extent. That means the tolerance level for experiencing stress is different for every one. However, chronic stress may lead to unpleasant condition even for strongest individuals. Prolonged stress can cause a permanent biochemical imbalance in the health system. This eventually leads to weaken immune system and hence to increase vulnerability for serious health condition, which may be proven fatal in due course of time. Stress is known to develop various health complications such as asthma, cardiac complication, high blood pressure, allergy, fatigue, depression, insomnia, anxiety, irregular bladder, headaches, body pain, and many more.

Dealing with Stress

In practice, there are essentially two ways to deal with stress. One is to eliminate stressors from the environment or at least minimize the stressors. The other one is increase the resistance power dealing with stress. Truly there are a great range of useful strategies to acquire these two attributes, but the key aspect of all variations comes to a single point, that is, relaxation. There is no single stress reduction technique; rather it needs to be implemented in combination with change in lifestyle, diet, exercise and relaxation. These factors complement a better management of stress in terms of reduction or elimination to some extent. Relaxation technique sounds pretty simple and the central theme of most of the stress reduction methods, however it is not so simple to acquire it without the expert guidance. The modern life demands experiencing stressful stimuli almost each moment, it is seen that relaxation technique has increasingly become the expert solution against stress.

Therapeutic Measures

There are various relaxation therapies that help individuals to achieve a deep beneficial relaxation experience. In particular, the therapeutic measures involve a combination of mind-body therapies, body movement, herbal diets and plentiful water. Most of the therapeutic measures can be practiced solely as a part of self care system, however, in few cases, continuous assistance of experts is mandatory.

Therapeutic measures focusing on the mind-body connection assumes that emotions may play a significant role in physical system. These measures in particular help individuals to get a hold on daily stressors and to cope with them rather than trying to eliminate them from environmental stimuli. Individual counseling and meditation are two crucial factors of such therapies. These techniques are truly beneficial for lowering blood pressure and gastric problems.

Different therapeutic measures are implemented in stress reduction program. These may include dance therapy, music therapy, massage therapy, art therapy and many others. The primary aim of these techniques is to enhance body-mind system in holistic fashion. Body work typically includes body touch mechanism involving manipulation, realignment and posture correction. This therapy is effective in deep tissue manipulation.

Herbal therapies are found to be beneficial for stress management in terms of providing a special emphasis for inner balance. It stresses on the significance of natural substances in relation to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual connectedness. Apart from that, there are other useful techniques that are effective in managing stress. These are acupuncture, Alexander technique, aromatherapy, autogenic training therapy, behavioral therapy, reflexology, naturopathy, Rolfing, kinesiology, Tai Chi Chuan, sound therapy, Reiki, autosuggestion therapy, Ayurveda, Bach Flower therapy, bioenergetics, biofeedback, flotation therapy, Feldenkrais method, Shiatsu and many others.

All Work and No Time for You

Women — especially mothers — often begin their work day at 6 a.m. in the home, put in 8 hours in the office and then work at home until they drop exhausted but worried into bed at midnight. In addition to stresses such as a demanding job, challenging family situations, or overwhelming debt, many women deal with a level of chronic, grinding stress of constant work throughout their waking hours.

If this comes close to describing you, read on to learn how to take radically better care of yourself! Good self-care can diminish the wearing stress of all work and no play.

Bounce Back with Radical Self-Care

Taking radically good care of yourself will build resilience — your bounce back factor! — and decrease stress levels in the process.

Write these statements on your forehead!

I deserve to take care of myself.

When I care for myself, I have more to give to others.

Jump Start Your PlanNow, here is a way to jump-start your plan for radical self-nurturing and stress relief.

List 20 Ways You Can Nurture Yourself

As fast as you can, make a list of at least 20 ways you can nurture and care for yourself. Be creative! Think of things that would please you immensely, or simply help you feel contented for a few minutes. Think of things that would help you be calm, have inner peace, or just have fun!

Remember the times of greatest contentment, happiness and joy in your life. Whatever you were doing then could contribute to personal peace, love, satisfaction and less stress now. What would make you feel good about yourself and your life? What would support you physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually?

Examples

A single mom in my office works out vigorously for about twenty minutes three times a day. She swears this method of caring for herself has saved her sanity through a grueling, stressful divorce.

Instead of ironing your teenager’s clothes at 10 p.m., maybe you need a hot bath with a glass of wine. Or an hour with your favorite soothing music, or an evening or an hour to yourself. Do you need an artist’s date once a week to nurture your creativity (as Julia Cameron suggests in The Artist’s Way)? Do you need to sing outrageously happy songs while you drive?

Radical Self-Care Is Habit-Forming

OK, get busy and put a few of your ideas into action. Notice how you feel afterward. Less irritated and frustrated? Less stressed? More energized and enthusiastic? More loving and peaceful? Take heed. Radical self-care is habit-forming! You’ll want to do it regularly to lighten up your life and increase your personal peace quotient.

I can’t tell you how many times someone has said to me, “Breathing — what’s the big deal? If I’m alive, I’m breathing — right?” S/he were using this as a proof that there was NOTHING WRONG with his/her breathing. In other words, s/he were indicating her/his belief that the only thing that could go wrong with breathing is to stop it all together.

This could not be further from the truth. The truth is that effective breathing is essential to health and well-being.

There are no substitutes. There are no alternatives.

Oxygen is more crucial to our life than is food or fluids. On most days, we can safely go hours without fluids (Note: I don’t advise doing this). If there is a good reason, we can go days without food (Note 2: I don’t advise doing this, either).

We cannot go 5 minutes without breathing.

That is how vital oxygen — and breathing — is to our existence. You cannot do without it! However, sometimes, people try to do so!

It is quite common for people, under extreme stress, to hold their breaths. It is routine for people who are tired to breathe shallowly. Neither of these lead to ample oxygen to adequately serve the body’s needs.

When your body is deprived of adequate oxygen, it subtly tenses up. It does this specifically because it is getting dangerously low on such a crucial necessity!

Such tensing of your body increases stress on your system. This is exactly the OPPOSITE of what is needed for stress reduction.

So, the solution is simple: You can begin to purposely breathe d-e-e-p-l-y and s-l-o-o-o-w-l-y. Taking ten slow, deep breaths begins to reverse the stress that was imposed by shallow, rapid breathing. Taking fifteen slow, deep breaths begins to speed you on your way to successful stress reduction.

And the beauty of this is that you have EVERYTHING you need, with you this very minute. Right now — this very minute — try it out!

Go ahead — notice how you are feeling this very moment. Then, begin to take 15 slow, deep breaths. Just inhale deeply to the count of 4 — 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 — and, then, change the cycle. Now exhale deeply to the count of 4 — 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 — and, change the cycle back. Proceed in that way for 15 slow, deep breaths.

Now, notice how you feel as a result. What do you notice?

That’s right: Your stress has begun to diminish; your relaxation has begun to increase. And best of all: You can do this to reduce your level of stress anytime … anyplace!

Life is more stressful than ever these days, and everyone is seeking stress reduction. The Information Age has quickly become the Overwhelming Age as more and more new information is generated and pushed at us daily. Our society is now structured so that one person now must fulfill many family and community roles. Especially in our midlife years, we find ourselves trying to climb the corporate ladder, care for children, care for elderly parents, be good spouses and partners, pursue some level of personal growth, and attend to church and community matters. So many messages are coming into us! No wonder stress is a bigger problem than ever for many!

The key to reducing stress in your life is, paradoxically, not to escape it, but to increase the ability of your mind to deal with it. The best way to do this is to provide yourself with specific methods of venting out the excess messages that are flooding you every day. By increasing your ability to cope with stress, you will reduce your reaction to it. Wouldn’t it be nice to face a situation that you usually find stressful with a calm, focused mind?

Here are the six most effect methods that I have found in my practice for increasing the ability to cope with daily stress.

Yoga. The practice of yoga is not only physical, but mental. The gentle, consistent focus required in a half-hour practice of yoga does wonders to free the mind of extraneous thoughts and stress. Plus, the effect of lengthening the muscles helps to reduce your tendency to get those stress kinks in your back and neck. Try to practice at least three times a week for a half hour.

Meditation. Meditation is another powerful way to focus the mind. The process of eliminating all other thought gives you a feeling of peace and calm, and this feeling lasts well beyond your session. Practice for just 10 minutes daily, and use your ability to focus to quickly reduce your stress levels on command throughout the day.

Exercise. Good exercises for stress reduction are cardio and aerobic type exercises such as running, stair climbing, elliptical machines and the like. The key is to get your body into the “zone” where you are shutting out the rest of the world and focusing on your breathing and the sensation of the exercise. As a bonus, a physically fit body is more capable of handling the physical effects of stress, too. Make exercise a regular practice (at least three times a week for 20 minutes) and keep up with it.

Hypnosis. Hypnosis (or Hypnotherapy) is a wonderful strategy for reducing stress. The mind naturally vents the built-up excess and stressful messages in they hypnotic state, so simply being in hypnosis provides a measure of relief from stress. In addition, a skilled hypnotherapist can provide suggestions that will enable you to deal in a calm, focused way with stressful situations. If you are often faced with situations that create anxiety, hypnosis can alleviate your stress reaction to those situations, and the effects of hypnosis can last a very long time, even years after your therapy has been completed.

Simplify. If you can, reduce the stress in your life. Learn to say no to additional responsibilities that you don’t have the time, or inclination, to do. Taking control of your life, realizing that you have a choice in everything that you do, is a major step toward reducing stress.

Take time for yourself. Finally, make sure there is time in your daily and weekly routine for you! Do the things that bring energy to you, to counterbalance the many activities that take energy from you. Read a book, walk in nature, paint, sing, dance: whatever it is that brings you pleasure. The more that activity causes you to focus on it and eliminates thoughts about the rest of the world, the better.

Take time for yourself, choose one or more of these stress reduction activities, and get more out of life now!

It’s holiday time again and as I am writing this I have a list of to-do’s as long as my arm. Add to that, my employer decided to send me out of the country for a week, with two weeks’ notice, two weeks before Christmas. I have cause for a little stress, but I have coping secrets, which I will share with you! Hypnosis for stress reduction is extremely effective, and if you don’t have access to a certified hypnotherapist, self-hypnosis is a great option as well.

First of all, what causes stress? Stress is an overload of messages on our system. It is the state anxiety that happens to us when events and responsibilities exceed what we feel our abilities are. Basically, the body and mind go into the fight or flight response, because of this overload situation. If the stresses that we are reacting to are pervasive, that is if they go on day after day and week after week (like a job that is too demanding, or is a bad fit for us), then we can become stuck in the stress response, because our body and mind never get a chance to “stand down” from the reaction.

When stress continues over weeks and months like this, it takes a toll on us physically, spiritually, emotionally and psychologically. Our body can develop mal-adaptations, like ulcers. We catch colds more frequently. We can begin having anxiety attacks. The more the situation persists, the less spiritual and emotional reserves we have left to battle back to a state of equilibrium. At this point, we need intervention. Something must be done, and that something is learning 1.) how to manage the stress we have in our lives, and 2.) learning how to reduce the events or issues causing us stress.

Reducing the causes of stress in our life is often difficult, because doing so asks us to make sometimes significant changes in our lives. Listen to your body and the small still voice within. If you are not saying “no” often enough, or if you need to change a job or relationship situation, take steps toward positive change. Feeling helpless in a situation is a major cause of stress. Know that you are the author of your life, and everything in life is a choice.

Learning how to manage stress is a matter of educating yourself, taking advantages of resources, and making yourself a priority-take the time to do it! Hypnosis is an excellent method of managing stress, because of the nature of the hypnotic state. During sleep, our minds “vent out” the stresses of the day in dreams. The hypnotic state is actually a powerful state that causes the mind to vent out those excess inputs, that build up of too many messages that cause the overload. So, simply experiencing the hypnotic state relieves some of the stress reaction. In addition, during hypnosis, a hypnotherapist will provide suggestions to your mind to train you to release anxieties, let go of guilt, and develop and assimilate new coping mechanisms and ways of reacting to the causes of stress in your life.

If you don’t have access to a hypnotherapist, self-hypnosis is also a viable option. While you may not achieve as deep of a hypnotic state in self-hypnosis, you can perform it more often and therefore you can ingrain the new behaviors quickly. If possible, find a hypnotherapist who will treat you as well as teaching you the skill of self-hypnosis.

Stress reduction, even during the holidays, is possible. Managing your stress with hypnosis is a coping mechanism not only for the holidays, but for life! May your life be full and blessed, may you be the author of your life, and find happiness!

Stress is a major factor for most workers, but for teachers it seems to be at all time highs. In one 2000 study, over 40% of teachers reported being “Highly Stressed” because of their jobs and physicians know that stress doesn’t just affect us psychologically. Feelings of stress have been linked to more than 50 different physician symptoms, including headaches, back pain, high blood pressure, and more. The good news is that getting organized with classroom furniture storage can make a surprisingly big difference in your stress levels.

Generally, humans experience stress as a reaction to events beyond their control. However, we often perceive things as out of our control when that’s not really the truth. That’s often the case with some aspects of teaching. For example, if you feel overwhelmed by art supplies being strewn all over your room, that’s not really out of your control. Instead, you just need a better method of organizing those art supplies. That’s one place where classroom furniture storage can make a difference.

By having well-defined areas for these supplies in convenient locations, such as in drawers or shelves under an easel, you’re going to make it easier for those scissors and markers to end up back where they belong. Plus, you’ll be better able to require the students to get in the habit of getting their play areas organized which means less clean up for you at the end of the day. Instead of running around to put away paint brushes, you’ll be able to sit down at your desk, look around your organized classroom, and take five minutes for yourself to unwind from the day – a very important part of reducing your stress.

Using classroom furniture storage can also make it easier for you to arrange your room in an organized way, too. A classroom in disarray is not good for the children or for you. You can book display stands, for example, to section off the part of your room where you have reading time or where students can go to relax with a book. You might want to have a few pillows on the floor or a bean bag chair or two so kids can relax while they’re reading.

Classroom furniture storage can also be used to set aside certain areas for art. You can use easels or tables which have built in shelves or drawers so your students can reach everything they need. That also means you’ll be spending less time running around to gather the water colors, crayons, and other supplies. Surely, cutting a little bit of that running here and there out of your day will help you reduce your stress greatly.

Another reason classroom furniture storage can help you reduce stress is also by making it easier for you to see at a glance what you need. For example, if you store away the art paper in a closet or some other location where it’s not easy to see, you could run out without even realizing it. The same is true for most of the supplies your students are using everyday. However, if that art paper was on a roll attached to the art desks, for instance, you could not only know for sure when the paper ran out but you can know with just a glance how low the amount actually was. You’ll be able to stay one step ahead of the stress by not letting any of your necessities run out unexpectedly and that’s something you can only do effectively with well-organized classroom furniture storage.
